Inspired by the profound writings of South African novelist Zakes Mda and set to the evocative strains of Maurice Ravel’s legendary Boléro, Cion: Requiem of Ravel’s Boléro weaves a powerful narrative of greed, power, and communal mourning. Set against the eerie backdrop of a graveyard, the performance follows a designated mourner as he navigates the complexities of post-Apartheid South Africa. Gregory Maqoma’s choreography is both intricate and raw, capturing the emotional depths of a society in transition.

The show features a live score that echoes the harmonies of Isicathamiya — a traditional South African music style — brought to life by an African gospel quartet whose voices are as transformative as the choreography itself.
