A Summer of Dance

Rianto: Medium
Saturday, June 7, 2025 at 8 pm
The Nimoy
“There is something deliciously knowing about the way Rianto melds the traditional and the contemporary,” writes Witness, Australia.
In Medium, he explores the Lengger dance, a Central Javanese cross-gender tradition that has long embraced fluidity, ritual, and transformation. With each gesture, he transcends fixed categories, interweaving past and present, masculine and feminine, movement and stillness. Accompanied by Cahwati’s live vocal and percussion score, Medium is a visceral journey into the spaces between, where identity is not confined but continuously reshaped.
Bringing this striking work to The Nimoy, Rianto invites audiences into a performance that is both deeply personal and universally resonant. Don’t miss out on this performance, presented by CAP UCLA, with funds provided by the NEA Challenge Grant Endowment.

Miguel Gutierrez: Super Nothing
Friday, June 13 – Saturday, June 14, 2025 at 8 pm
Freud Playhouse, UCLA
In Super Nothing, choreographer Miguel Gutierrez strips dance down to its rawest, most essential form—a space where movement, memory, and emotion collide. Featuring a diverse ensemble of performers from New York and Los Angeles, the piece takes inspiration from bell hooks’ writings on intimacy and choice, exploring what it means to exist in relation to others.
In the intimate space of The Nimoy, the audience becomes part of the experience, immersed in the raw physicality and emotional depth of the piece. If you’re drawn to performances that challenge convention and invite reflection, this is one you won’t want to miss.
